GeneXus' Olimar version

Nicolás Jodal, ARTech's Director, has announced that the first beta of the GeneXus' upcoming version, called Olimar, will be released within a month.
Some of the main news that comes with the GeneXus' Olimar version features improvements in the GeneXus core, easy migration from Win to the Web within the GeneXus world, as well as new generators and improvements in the already existing generators. Jodal announced that the new version of this beta would be released within a month.

New report and proc editor
- Print-block edition is separated from code edition.
- Printing is maintained subordinated to the code through print commands that reference print blocks by their name.
- Code edition features syntax coloring, intellitips, search capabilities, etc.

Web Services: improvements in the consumption of external Web Services.

Improvements making Win-to-Web migration easier
- A work-with work panel can be migrated to a work-with web panel since it is now possible to have an implicit record on the sub-files in the Web (it works in Internet Explorer and Netscape). In the past, it was necessary to place links in the sub-file for each of the record's actions, and to create another visualization screen showing the entire object and all the actions; this is still a very good option.
- WEB-screen design and changes of such screens ("style"-like mechanism) made easier and quicker.
- Possibility of defining Web transactions as Web components.

Improvements in the database model design (GeneXus' core)
- Changes in sub-types management:
1- Better performance in applications with large data volumes: multiple sub-types will be included within a single select sentence upon generation of a "join", which will improve the performance of large applications.
2- Sub-type sub-types: it will be possible to make an inferred sub-type from an inferred sub-type.
3- Sub-type incorporation on a formula.

Attribute-related changes
1- Auto-number: defining an attribute as auto-numbered without the need to program the numbering logic, but by directly implementing it in the DBMS.
2- Defining whether or not null values will be supported at the attribute level.
3- Initial value in reorganizations: Instead of creating null-value attributes, it is possible to specify a value (constant, resulting from a function or procedure, etc) that will be assigned to such an attribute upon reorganization.

- New type of data (blob) for storing images in the database.
-More intuitive surfing in GeneXus
- New type of data to make Workflow work easier.

Generators:
1- Winform for Microsoft.NET
A new C# generator for Winforms will be released, having the same functionalities as the current Java generator including multi-tier execution support. This way, total support (Win and Web) for the Microsoft.NET platform will be completed.

2- Changes in the Java generator
Among other changes, it will include the field-by-field validation option. This option will not be exactly the same as the one that GeneXus has in Visual Fox Pro and Visual Basic.

3- Pocket PC generator for off-line applications. (Today, developing applications with web panels for Pocket PCs is already possible).

Other new features brought by the Olimar version:
- For-each command, being able to go through a collection or vector.
- Intellitip for the parameters of the object to be called to appear upon writing the CALL.
- Call to external object: today, when making a call to an external object, a call is made to the program's name; the idea is to offer the possibility of configurating properties to the object that is being called.
