The future, 20 years after the PC

Breogán Gonda, ARTech's President, anticipated, at the presentation he made at the XII GeneXus International Meeting, that there will to be great changes in the next two years.

ARTech's President started by pointing out that Microsoft's vision, of placing a PC on every household, has been achieved throughout the last 20 years - at least in most developing countries - , in the last 20 years. Intel's vision formulated in Moore´s Law, according to which power is doubled every 18 months, has been met for the last 20 years. Nowadays, almost all software is developed in PCs. However, in the future, computers - be it large servers, PCs or related-devices - will use applications operating on transportable execution platforms. In this context it will be software and not a piece of iron which will be essential, declared Gonda. All iron pieces will become commodities, he added.
Today, the software industry is still programming by hand thus incurring in enormous costs, and running into great difficulties that make it hard to shift into new technologies; programming is not portable. However, Gonda declares that knowledge-based development will substitute manual development. The world is not willing to learn new low-level languages, and this is one of the reasons why an excellent tool such as Java has had little penetration after five years in the market. The same applies to Microsoft.NET C# language, added Gonda. Besides, he explained that new programmers are not being trained to work with very old technologies, and the developed countries are running short on human resources for the computer science area.

In this new scenario, the GeneXus community can find ways to profit from technology and stand for its own successful experiences as well as those of others. There should be competition, but also collaboration. He proposed that we change business scales by emphasizing knowledge-sale rather than systems-sale.
He announced that there was a great opportunity lying ahead and encouraged the audience to profit from it. ARTech is undergoing great change. The company plans to launch new products, make a big investment in research and development, increase the commercial drive, and look for as well as take advantage of commercial alliances in order to change scales, and "take off", stated ARTech's  President
