Toyo University with GeneXus

Toyo University was established in 1887, and at present it has 838 tenured professors, 1225 specially hired professors and 700 temporary staff.

Aware of the problems currently faced by Japan due to its declining young population -a number that is expected to decline further in the next few years- they decided to design their staff management system and adapt it so as to obtain information that allowed them to monitor course attendance, manage HR training, calculate payroll, recruiting, and so on.

With that objective in mind, they looked for distributors who could develop this solution and finally they found SSE, a partner of GeneXus Japan.

Challenges

The objective was to develop an application to manage all the people who work for the University.

The solution had to be innovative in terms of technology so as to be at the forefront in a highly competitive market. At the same time, it had to allow for easy maintenance. In that regard, Inoue Toshio, HR Manager at the University, explained that it was the main reason why they didn’t purchase a legacy system, because they wanted cutting-edge software that wouldn’t become obsolete.

Results

The solution developed involves 1,230 GeneXus objects for 520 features. The main advantage highlighted by Inoue Toshio was the progress achieved in developing the application from the beginning up to the prototyping screens. In addition, another benefit was that the overall cost of the solution was lower than expected, but its quality was nevertheless very good.

The solution is an application running in Java under Linux, using PostgreSQL as a database. It is expected to be tested in January and validated in April, 2011.
