How To :: GXportal :: Integration with Facebook and Twitter

06December/2010
The Basic, Professional and Enterprise plans of GXportal SaaS now include a series of new components that allow you to integrate social widgets provided by Facebook and Twitter. Below we will show you what they are and how to use them.
When adding a new component to a page, you will find a new group of "social networks" in which the GXportlets described below are located.

Twitter Tweet

To enable our website users to send a Tweet from the page they are currently viewing, we have to use this GXportlet where we just configure the width, height and style of the button that can be displayed in the horizontal or vertical Tweet counter, or simply show the button without the counter.

Tip: another option is to place this button in the site templates so that it is added to all the website pages.

Facebook Like

This GXportlet allows you to show Facebook’s "I like" option in any page in your website. Just like the previous one, it is one of the most widely used options today to share pages and contents through these social networks.

The options offered by this component include the presentation style, as follows: the standard one such as the previous image, a button with a counter that shows the number of people that have clicked on that button in the current page and a Box Count that in addition to showing the "I like" button, it shows the number of people that have clicked on it in the current page.

It can also be used with the "I like" or "Recommend" text.

Facebook Like Box

Facebook’s “Like Box” allows users to see how many people like a certain page on Facebook, as well as read the most recent publications and check that they like the page without visiting it on Facebook. This is a good way to integrate the activity taking place on Facebook with your website.

In order to do this, you need the URL of the Facebook page, for example http://www.facebook.com/gxportal. (For a company’s page, Facebook requires that it has at least 100 fans to let you create this URL.)

You can also configure if you want to display current publications with a header that says "Look for us on Facebook" and the number of people shown below it, as well as the colors, which can be light or dark.

Facebook Activity Feed

This Activity Feed shows the recent activity associated with the website configured in this component. If nothing is configured, it takes the current domain where this component is being executed. This makes it possible to show the stories that users share and website contents through the Like or Share option in Facebook. If the user was logged in to Facebook, highlighted information is displayed about his friends that have shared something from the current website.

In the same way as before, a certain URL can be configured to display Facebook activity, in addition to setting how it should be displayed and if recommendations made by users on Facebook about the configured website should be included.

Our aim is to continue to evolve based on our customer’s needs, so we hope you enjoy these new integration options provided by GXportal 5.0.
