The Android fever :: Post by Cristhian Gómez about his experience using the platform

Christian Gómez from the GeneXus Community in Uruguay shares his expectations for GeneXus X Evolution 2.
A few days ago I noticed that an “Android fever” has caught up in the GeneXus Community, and this has made me very happy. What's most interesting to me is that a large majority of the people I know in the Community have an iPhone or BlackBerry, so it’s great news that they are starting to work with Android.

As for me, my interest in Android goes back to mid-2008, when a friend told me that Android would be the next big thing, and at the time I did some research into it.

Unfortunately, back then I was too busy to learn more about Android. The only thing I achieved was a "Hello World" and for that I had to download the SDK and configure Eclipse.

I wasn’t motivated enough to keep on trying because I didn't have a phone to test what I had developed and didn't want to just play with an emulator, so I decided to wait until mobile phones with Android were available in Uruguay. I thought that if it was really going to be that popular, it wouldn't be long before I had one.

In March 2010, I learned that the mobile provider Movistar was bringing Samsung Galaxy phones with Android, and shortly thereafter Ancel started to bring Huawei phones with Android too, but they were sold under a service contract. Since I didn't want to change my contract or provider, I tried to find a phone abroad with no strings attached.

By mid-2010, a friend found me an HTC Magic with Android 1.6, and this led me to give Android development another try. The truth is that I could do very little, because manual programming takes a long time, in addition to extensive research before dealing with a new platform.

Luckily, a few days ago GeneXus released Evolution 2 Beta 1, which allows me to generate applications for Android, and the truth is I’m very enthusiastic about working on Android to make the most of my phone.

Anyway, the first thing I have to do to get started is update the Android version on my phone because I have Android 1.6 and I think that the most interesting applications are for version 2.1.
