Within the area of computer systems applied to corporate
environments, there is a great deal of informal processes for taking or querying
information. By this we mean instances such as sales order taking, which is
usually written on paper and then entered into the system, or queries about a
product's stock.
One reason for the persistence of these informal processes
has been that it is not easy to have a PC or laptop with an application
connected to a central data base at the time of carrying out these tasks. But,
with the development of mobile technologies, it is now possible to have an
information entry and query point that is portable, robust and easy to use.
With this in mind, the .NET Mobile has been created using
the .NET Compact Framework. Although it is similar to the .NET Framework, it was
originally created for mobile devices, considering their specific needs and
battery use.
This new generator offers the main features of GeneXus in
the Win interface, as well as the new advantages of the Yi version of GeneXus.
This way, carrying out an application in .NET Mobile is no different from
development in the programming environment in any other platform, except for the
necessary allowance concerning screen size.
This enables using the knowledge stored in our GeneXus KBs
in this new technology without the need for venturing into reengineering
processes.
Applications thus created can esther work with a local
data base (SQL CE) or access a centralized data base (SQL Server). Supported
devices are those that run a system from the Windows Mobile family such as
Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2002, Smart Phone, etc.
In most cases mobile applications will be a branch of a
corporate system, so data communication mechanisms have been integrated in this
generator. SQL Server native communications methods can be used to synchronize
data or alternatively Web Services can also be used to send and receive
information.
The .NET Mobile generator customarily supports wireless
report printing as well as bar code reading by scanners integrated in the same
devices.
We then have a new generator with the same capacity as
others but oriented to this rapidly growing new market. This enables GeneXus
programmers to be ahead of the game in the competition for that market's
leadership.
