Cloud Computing: challenges and opportunities |
|
“What is Cloud Computing?” was the name of the event organized by Geocom. Artech’s Gastón Milano was invited to participate. Along with Microsoft’s and IBM’s speakers, Milano spoke about the cloud and GeneXus. Following is a summary of his speech. |
“Cloud Computing is a great opportunity to create business applications with the GeneXus platform”, said Gastón Milano, as he spoke of a scenario called “economy of abundance”, where every technological innovation turns a scarce resource into an abundant one. This allows for significant actors like Microsoft, Google, IBM or Amazon to manage abundant resources (that is to say: storage, processing, services, data), while they search for ideas and applications that may be placed in their clouds. The Cloud Computing model changes the way to go about business applications. From the technical point of view, the applications’ scalability and availability are one of the strengths of the cloud model. And from the corporate perspective it implies a great opportunity for start-ups. According to this new trend, the appearance of firms launching new products related to this technology is expected.
Gastón Milano also mentioned the strategy for minimizing uncertainty relative to the new technologies: “Because it is a disruptive technology, it generates uncertainty, and we must become aware of the possible scenarios and gains”. And he gave the following example: “Though in 2006 no one asked for applications in the cloud, today it is a common demand from clients, and if you cannot provide it, you lose”. In that sense, Milano emphasized the fact that GeneXus offers developers a way to Cloud Computing (allowing applications to be run in Amazon’s or Microsoft Azure’s cloud). “Cloud Computing provides us with hardware and new business models, but we have the ideas at the GeneXus Community”, concluded Artech’s software architect. And that is, perhaps, the most valuable and scarce of all resources. |
