Apraful Software is a software house devoted almost
exclusively to developing systems for the health sector. It has been in the
Uruguayan market for more than 10 years, and it incorporated GeneXus as
development tool in 2000.
Since Apraful Software adopted GeneXus in 2000, its
product Magik has evolved together with the different GeneXus versions. It
incorporated GXplorer ?ARTech's Data Warehouse tool-, it migrated to GeneXus 8.0
this year, and it's now getting ready to move from Visual Basic to
Java.
The migration from GeneXus 7.5 to GeneXus 8.0 was carried
out "not only to make the most of the improvements offered by this version,"
explained José Mareque, Apraful Software's Director, "but also to prepare the
path for the KB migration from Visual Basic in a Win environment, to Java in a
Web environment. We believe that the future is Microsoft .NET and Java, and
clients are asking for that."
GeneXus 8.0 incorporated the structure data type that
Apraful Software adopted in its new version of Magik, considering the future
migration to Java.
"We used the structure data type to simplify and solve
procedures that accessed basic tables. For example, different procedures were
used to obtain a person's age, identity card, current contracts, or name. Now a
structure that defines anything linked to a person and his contracts is used.
Therefore, all the information is loaded only once, and is passed through
parameters to the rest of the procedures involved. This allows reducing the
amount of code and the queries at database level. In short, there is a
significant performance improvement," explained Mareque.
He also emphasized the improvements in the development
environment offered by GeneXus 8.0, as well as in the navigation.
The Magik KB has approximately 5,000 GeneXus objects, and
its next Java Web version will be released in 2005, announced Apraful Software
Director.
He also pointed out that working with only one KB implies
a competitive advantage, continuous improvement and client feedback. That's why
any request is considered in a more general aspect and included in the KB. This
means a significant added value, when compared to competitors," he
said.
Magik is an integral system for the health sector with 12
modules. Its GeneXus 8.0 version is under production at several health services
organizations in Uruguay, such as Servicio Médico Integral (SMI), the
Cooperativa Médica de Cerro Largo (Camcel), Banco de Seguros del Estado and the
Cooperativa Médica de Canelones (Comeca), Universal, Camedur and
Amedrin.
