|
Over the last ten years, the evolution of technology unfolded at dizzying speed as GeneXus also grew rapidly together with its global Community. This article reviews some of the most significant milestones from the beginning of the 21st century up the current smart devices era. |
2010 has ended! This was also the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Over this period, humanity achieved many great things. Medicine and scientific research brought us the conclusion of the human genome project, advances in artificial tissue and stem cell technology, and innovations in bioengineering and environmental technology. In the ICT arena, everything changed with the arrival of broadband and smartphones. Internet search engines radically changed how we access knowledge, and the Web 2.0 transformed how it is generated by making collaboration possible. Social networks experienced an explosive growth, becoming the first source of information and means of communication. Evolution of the GeneXus Community over the course of ten years In the year 2000, the GeneXus Community held its XI International Meeting of GeneXus Users and Breogán Gonda called it the “Year of the Internet.” At the time, he commented that: “Many people considered Web applications as something completely different and isolated. However, almost all companies need systems that have Web components which are integrated with their general systems. We at Artech have looked closely at the market and have continuously developed new technology. At present we are performing the last tests of the new GeneXus version that contains, among other important elements, Web Objects that represent the combination of the best of both worlds: the graphics world with a powerful editor where we can introduce sophisticated graphic elements developed using the leading products in the field and the intelligence to access the GeneXus database.” In turn, Alejandro Panizza introduced a future full of possibilities brought by mobile applications with GeneXus In the year 2000, there were already 20 million websites on the Internet and the use of MP3 technology was reaching massive scale. New LCD screens were also introduced. The GeneXus development team was fully aware of the pressing importance of focusing on the Internet, so they released GeneXus 7.0, Multiple-layer programming and GeneXus Web Start. In 2001, Artech, which had recently launched its version of GeneXus for the Microsoft .NET platform, introduced 18 applications developed for this platform. All these developments meant that the GeneXus Community was at the forefront in everything related to business applications developed with .NET. The software industry had definitely reached a higher level, and with it the GeneXus Community expanded all over the world. This growth led to the establishment of Artech subsidiaries in the United States, Brazil, Japan and Mexico, as well as to the creation of alliances with distributors worldwide. By 2004 and 2005, while the GeneXus Community continued to expand, the technology field witnessed the arrival of new players: Mozilla Firefox, Facebook, Flickr, Gmail, Digg, YouTube. The term Web 2.0 was created. At the beginning of the 21st century, the GeneXus technology was backed by three generations of developers and GeneXus had evolved to version X. The niche of applications to be developed in the new Cloud Computing environment made a big difference towards the end of the decade. This new scenario that was emerging opened many opportunities and the Community was quick to take them by devising new business models and focusing on software as a service. The GeneXus Community could feel it: migrating to the Web was the present and the future of technology, and in order to be a part of it they already had GeneXus X Evolution and GXserver. What’s more, as mobile devices consolidated and became widely popular, the Community quickly understood that a new revolution had settled in for the long haul: it was the smart devices era. For this reason, in addition to celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Community and of collaborating to make ideas come true, the first applications for smart devices developed using GeneXus X Evolution 2 were introduced at the XX GeneXus Meeting. It’s the beginning of a new decade, which brings a wealth of challenges and opportunities. The GeneXus Community is ready and will continue to work hard and achieve great success at the forefront of innovation. Welcome 2011 and the smart devices era! |
