Augmented reality technologies to be implemented in 2011 will seek to reduce obstacles found by buyers upon acquiring products through the Internet: intangibility. As well as with 3D technology, the idea is to maximize the visual sensorial experience. |
Augmented reality comes along with mobile devices that result from advances in geolocalization. These new access interfaces customize information on the physical space where users are located, thus the expression “augmented reality”. Two examples of users are museums and tour guides. The technology is currently being tested in other activities such as surgery or the consumption of different products. The main difference with virtual reality is that, instead of substituting physical reality, in this case, computer data is printed over the real world (Wikipedia).
There will be many software companies offering augmented reality applications, but only those capable of taking the significant portion of the information, based on the knowledge of customers, will come up with successful applications. According to David del Val, Director of New Products and Services Development at Telefónica I+D: “People are willing to pay to have filters for the avalanche of information available”.
Example of augmented reality applied to travel guide:
Additionally, at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, the products that captured the greatest attention were 3D screen for cell phones. 2011 will surely be the year when we will also discover mobile phones to watch movies and other types of 3D images.
