Hereford is one of the most popular bovine breeds in
Uruguay, and has a large number of animals with tested pedigree. Since 1993,
breeder productivity is measured with Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), which
results from the pedigree information and the productive information in the form
of a genetic numeric estimate.
On the website of the Uruguayan Society of Hereford
Breeders, (http://www.hereford.org.uy)
which was developed using GeneXus 8.0 by Agromatica -a software company of the
sector- visitors can consult EPD data from a database of over four thousand
selected male breeders. Each SCH ranch has a username and password to enter the
site and view the EPD data of all their animals. Among all ranches, it's
possible to search data about more than 225,000 animals.
The site includes both dynamic and static content, with
institutional information such as directives, commissions, guidelines, and more.
The dynamic part was developed using GeneXus 8.0, the Java generator, and the
PostgreSQL database on Linux. GXChart was also used to help view the data that
was presented.
"The GeneXus development took approximately a week, with
one developer. The server and the database took another week," informed Juan
Echavarria from Agromatica. "We did not have major difficulties when installing
the production environment, and the database speed was satisfactory, which makes
us want to continue down this road," Echavarria points
out.
