Jorge García, who is responsible for the Sun ONE software platform of Sun Microsystems of Argentina, participated in the XIII GeneXus International Meeting and agreed to the following interview for GeneXus News.
What is Sun's vision?
Sun Microsystem's vision is encompassed in the following phrase: "The Network is the Computer." Sun was founded with this vision in mind. It is a vision of computers that talk to each other, regardless of whoever built them. Ours is a vision in which technology works for us, and not the other way around. While others protect systems and proprietary architectures, we focus on taking companies to the network age, providing systems and software that meet the required levels of scalability and reliability for doing online business.
What is the company business?
Sun is the leading supplier of Hardware, Software, and Services for Network Computing. In practically every single field, from manufacturing to financial services, from telecommunications to education, retailing, government, energy or health, Sun is helping companies to profit from the power of Internet, to improve processes and increase productivity, and also to reduce costs and complexity. We understand the practical problems that clients face on a daily basis, and we offer products and services that will lead them to a competitive level.
Could you briefly tell us about Sun ONE's offer?
Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) is Sun Microsystem's vision, architecture, platform, and expertise for building and implementing on-demand services. It provides a scalable and robust base for traditional applications as well as for Web-based applications. It has also paved the way for the upcoming generation of distributed IT models, such as Web services. To sum up, Sun One offers: Application Server, Directory Server, Portal Server, Messaging Server, Identity Server, Web Server, Calendar Server, Sun One Studio, as a reference of the products that make up Sun One.
What are Sun's future plans?
Innovation, leadership, and integration of the business processes are Sun Microsystem's renowned characteristics. With vision and superior client service focus, Sun is announcing the release of two integration projects in the short term: Orion and Mad Hatter.
Orion is a complete standard- based platform for Web Services. It includes all the platform software required for implementing Web Services, either from Sun or any other standard compliant company. It will be completely updated every three months.
Mad Hatter is aimed at users' desktops and offers the following at a low cost: a GNOME user interface; Mozilla browser; StarOffice, Java's virtual equipment; e-mail and calendar.
How did you like the XIII GeneXus International Meeting?
This has been an extraordinary event. The attendance, the quality of the lecturers, and the strong commitment to the brand reveal the close bond that exists between GeneXus, its partners, and its clients. It has reinforced our conviction that the future will find GeneXus and Sun working even closer and offering cutting-edge products to their clients.
What do you think about GeneXus?
GeneXus produces a feeling of freedom and confidence. GeneXus is a powerful tool that frees its users from their dependency on the technological platform, and provides them with the possibility of selecting, for each particular case, the most appropriate platform in terms of scalability, cost, and performance.
What message would Sun like to give to the GeneXus community regarding Sun's offer?
